Mission and Responsibilities
The Secretariat General of Information - Secretariat General of Communication has a mandate to:
a) Provide the Greek people with objective information.
b) Inform state services and public sector agencies on important international events as well as views and reactions of Greek and foreign public opinion, including those of mass media, on issues affecting the country.
c) Inform international public opinion, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other competent bodies, on the Greek positions and views on various issues; promote the country’s image abroad; and contribute to the strengthening of relations with foreign countries and international organizations.
d) Contribute to the strengthening of national and cultural links with Greeks of the Diaspora and keep them informed on matters that affect them.
e) Formulate state policy and ensure the adoption of the necessary legislative and prescriptive initiatives regarding the regulation of the wider sector of the mass media and help shape and implement policies for providing all kinds of radio and TV services necessary to the Information Society.
f) Follow international and European developments in the wider field of information and communication media in order to coordinate and regulate all necessary measures for the appropriate adaptation of the national audiovisual policies.
g) Plan, develop and make good use of European Union programs relevant to the terms of reference of the Secretariat General of Communication and the Secretariat General of Information; create and support institutions that will ensure the most comprehensive possible information for both the domestic and international public opinion.
h) Ensure the proper functioning of the Data Bank.
i) Collect and make good use of data relevant to the wider terms of reference of the Secretariat General of Communication - Secretariat General of Information, especially in the field of national, political, social, economic, cultural and environmental issues concerning Greece and Hellenism in general, as well as international issues that are relevant to the country and/or the international bodies of which Greece is a member.
In order to fulfill their terms of reference, the Secretariat General of Communication - Secretariat General of Information makes use of all the institutional means provided to it for this purpose. It acquires all the facilities that their competent bodies deem necessary, produces information material and organizes of events.
