NBC’s Rick Steve reports on Athens’ dramatic change. The city of about 4 million has made a concerted effort to curb pollution, clean up and pedestrianize the streets, spiff up the museums, build a new airport, and invest in one of Europe's better public-transit systems.
Athens still has its "big three" sights: the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora and the remarkable National Archaeological Museum. In June the fourth big sight of the city is opening - the New Acropolis Museum.
The new museum is a world-class space, custom-built to showcase the Parthenon sculptures, a state-of-the-art building worth a look itself.
Besides sightseeing, Athens is ideal for strolls and wanderings through the Plaka district, through the Monastiraki flea market and the Psyrri neighborhood. Read more…
NAVTEQ Announces Full Navigable Map Coverage of Greece (earthtimes.org, 16.03.09) |
A new full navigable map coverage of Greece, designed to help residents of Greece and its many visitors travel between the spectacular mountains, impressive coastline and stunning beaches, has been announced by NAVTEQ, a global provider of digital map data.
The new map contains Greece’s entire network of around 320,000 kilometres of roads. Moreover there are over sixty 3D Landmarks, such as famous monuments, buildings and other historic sites like the Acropolis in Athens, Heraklion's Knossos, Patra's Odeon and Agia Sofia in Thessaloniki.
In addition, the new map includes many Points of Interest and a map designed for pedestrians with a wide range of public transport information. Read more…

Baghdad-Athens flight pact reached (IHT, 04.03.09) |
Greek and Iraqi transport authorities signed a pact that could open the way for direct flights between Baghdad and the European Union.
The accord gives Iraqi Airways the option of opening a route between Baghdad and Athens, which would be the first European Union destination for flights from Iraq's capital.
