Olympia Dukakis, Nia Vardalos in Chicago for Greek Gabby Awards (nwi.com, 14.06.09)

The “Gabby Awards”, created to celebrate excellence amongst Greek Americans and to honor those people who best exemplify the hard work and excellence in the various areas in which they have excelled both as a community, as well as individuals, will be held for the first time in 2009 in Chicago.

Nia Vardalos and her co-star from her new film "My Life in Ruins," Alexis Georgoulis, will be presenters and Olympia Dukakis is being honored. Also attending will be Jim Gianopulos, a Hollywood's studio head, eleven-time NCAA All American Olympian diver Christina Loukas, Bon Appétit Magazine Chef of the Year Michael Psilakis and celebrity chef Cat Cora. Traveling with the Stars: Nia Vardalos (USA Today, 01.06.09)

Nia Vardalos, the Greek-American actress, talks to USA TODAY about her new film and shares her knowledge of Greece.

She talks about the shootings and the difficulties she faced, as well as the enthusiastic and humorous Greek people and the help from the Greek authorities.

Nia Vardalos: Moviemaking is all Greece to her (usatoday, 04.03.09)

A new movie by the star of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Nia Vardalos is about to be screened this spring.

My Life in Ruins, Vardalos’ new movie takes place in Greece. The actress plays Georgia, a history professor, who has lost her kefi (good mood), moves to Greece and gets a job as a tour guide.  She finds her kefi again thanks to a group of travellers led by Richard Dreyfuss and an inscrutable bus driver played by Alexis Georgoulis.

"It was a dream come true to shoot in Greece," says the actress. "It was surreal on the set, to stand by the Acropolis, close my eyes before they say 'Action' and feel the wind blowing through the columns. It doesn't get any better."

Reuniting with the actress as executive producers for the movie are Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson. Read more…

                                    

2009 Eurovision Song Contest

Sakis Rouvas and “This is our Night” will be Greece’s entry for the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest, which will be held in Moscow. Greek televoters at home as well as the professional jury chose this song among the three candidates to represent the country at the contest.

The lyrics for the song are written by the Greek Australian musical composers and songwriters Craig Porteils (born in Craig Portelis) and Cameron Giles-Webb.Viewers from 66 countries watched the Greek song selection through the live stream provided through Eurovision.tv.

Clothing catalogue featuring Greece (Spring 2009)

The new catalogue of the American clothing company “The Territory Ahead” features beautiful pictures of Greece.

Inside the catalogue picturesque Greek landscapes are presented, like the Meteora, Santorini and other Cycladic Islands, the Peloponnese, the Dodecanese Islands etc.

Moreover, archaeological and historical sites are featured, like the Acropolis, Delphi, the Palace of Knossos, the Venetian Harbour of Chania etc.

  • Acropolis frames TV award (TravelDailyNews.com, 04.02.09)

The Acropolis monument provided the perfect background for a series of music events organized by Greek music television channel MAD TV and supported by the City of Athens.

“MAD Live in Athens” involved the staging of major concerts which attracted audiences and Athens received extensive media coverage.

MAD TV competed against CNN, CBC, ESPN, The History Channel and several other international television channels and won the Silver Award at the New York Festivals International Television Programming & Promotion Awards 2009 for the "Mad Live in Athens" programme.   • Passionate Piaf letter to actor on sale (Reuters, 16.01.09)

A passionate love letter written by French singer Edith Piaf to Greek actor Dimitris Horn was auctioned in Athens on January 16.

The letter was written more than half a century ago, two days after Piaf met Horn at a performance in Athens. According to an excerpt printed in the auction catalogue, Piaf wrote: "I love you like I have never loved. Taki, don't let my heart die!"

Greek art collector and auctioneer Petros Vergos said the affair waned either because Horn, six years her junior, did not share her passion or because they both had other partners. Piaf herself was already in a relationship with French actor and singer Yves Montand. Read more…
