  • Kenyan runners sweep Athens Classic Marathon (AP/International Herald Tribune, 4.11.2007)

Benjamin Kiprotich Korir set a course record in the Athens Classic Marathon on Sunday, defeating Hosea Kimutai Kiptanui by 23 seconds in a race tracing the ancient course that gave this running event its name.

The top woman runner was Svetlana Ponomarenko of Russia with 2:33:19 — also a record. Read more..

                          

  • Greece to host the 17th Mediterranean Games in 2013 (english.eastday.com/Xinhua, 29.10.2007)

volos_small.jpgGreece will host the 17th Mediterranean Games in 2013, with the joint bid by its two cities Volos and Ioannina obtaining 37 votes against 34 for the Croatian city of Rijeka in the second round.

The Mediterranean Games, first held in 1951, are a multi-sport event held every four years, in the year following the Olympic Games.  Read more...

spartathlonAs extreme sports go, this one is ancient. It is one of the toughest races in the world - a sport where the body is almost bound to fail and only passion can push the runner forward. Finish, and you get some laurels and a drink of water.

The Spartathlon is a 246 km (153 mile) race from Athens to Sparta, which organizers say retraces the footsteps of the ancient Greek messenger Pheidippides, famous for running from Marathon to Athens to bring news of a victory against the Persians. Read more...
