Stavros Dimas is the European Commissioner in charge of environmental issues. As a Greek he says that he deeply believes in the use of renewable energies, especially the sun, to counter the rising global temperature caused by climate change.

He is representing the European Union in the Bali conference on global warming that started on December 3rd. His challenge will be to persuade major polluters, such as the US and the

the big emerging economies, to rally to the EU's anti-CO2 emissions schemes.

A Greek firm has unveiled a hi-tech office block that relies on solar power for heating and cooling.  The project, in a suburb of Athens, seeks to set an example in a country with a poor record in the use of renewable energy.

Greece enjoys bright sunshine for most of the year, but solar power is often used just for heating water. Most energy consumption in Greek houses and apartments comes from air conditioning during the long, hot summers, the BBC's Malcolm Brabant reports from Athens. The new Athens block captures the power of the sun and uses it primarily to cool down the building.

A team of scientists at the National Observatory of Athens is using artists’ renditions of sunsets to glean information about the effects of climate change. The team is looking at 554 works dating from 1500 to 1900 to estimate how much natural pollution was released into the skies.

By studying the colours in skies painted before and after such eruptions, researchers say they can calculate how much material was in the sky at the time. Read the entire article here.
