4th International Science Film Festival, Athens, 4-31 May 2009
The International Science Film Festival gathers up to date and high ranking productions from all over the world for the fourth successive year.
CAID –Societas, Scientia et Ars, founder and organiser of the festival – in an attempt to reach an even wider audience, presents more films this year than ever before, in five different locations in Athens and changes its structure, bringing science closer to more people.
The whole idea of the International Science Film Festival is to put scientists and scientific productions in contact with the public. It's not about educating the public; it's about giving people access to a side of science and research that they're not normally given access to.
Benaki Museum: “From the land of the Golden Fleece: Treasures of Ancient Colchis”
An impressive exhibition aiming to highlight the strong cultural ties that linked Ancient Greece with Colchis, (in the west of present day Republic of Georgia) is being presented at the Benaki Museum. “From the land of the Golden Fleece :Treasures of Ancient Colchis” attempts to acquaint the Greek public with the East, introducing the civilisation that developed on the Eastern shores of the Black Sea from the 5th to the 2nd century B.C. The exhibition, which showcases 140 works belonging to the National Museum of Georgia, in Tbilisi, has already been shown in major museums in Europe and the United States. The display runs from January 20 to April 6.

49th International Thessaloniki Film Festival - 14 - 23 November 2008
The 49th International Thessaloniki Film Festival opens its doors on November 14 2008. This year’s Festival features 230 films representing 55 countries, including two world premieres, six international premieres and three European ones.
The Golden and Silver Alexanders, as well as a number of additional prizes, will be awarded during the Festival. Oliver Stone, Emir Kusturica, Takeshi Kitano, Theo Angelopoulos and Willem Dafoe will be among the guests to attend the 49th Thessaloniki Film Festival, while the various juries of the Festival consist of well-known personalities from all over the world.

"Josef Koudelka Retrospective" is the exhibion held at Athens' Benaki Museum from September 18 to November 23.This retrospective presents all the stages and themes of his creative output over 40 years in photography. In 1968 Koudelka witnessed and chronicled the Soviet invasion of Prague and the crushing of the Czech resistance. He was later forced to flee the country; now he lives in France. His pictures of the events became dramatic international symbols (though he published them anonymously at first), helping him to win the esteemed Robert Capa Gold Medal. The exhibition is one of a series of events organised by the French Presidency of the European Union, organised in cooperation with the Magnum and Apeiron photo agencies.

The 37th Book Festival opened its doors on Friday September 12 at the Dionisiou Areopagitou pedestrian street, under the Acropolis. The book festival is organised by the Association of Book Publishers under the aegis of the City of Athens. More that 50,000 titles representing 300 publishers will be exhibited at the 228 pavilions of the exhibition. This year's festival is dedicated to inter-cultural dialogue. Several foreign embassies in Athens are contributing to the cultural program, which is being coordinated by the Danish Embassy. Every evening there will be literary events - readings and discussions highlighting the work of writers from Greece, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Finland, Norway, Poland and Denmark. The 37th Book Festival will last until September 28.

The 73rd Thessaloniki International Trade Fair took place at the Thessaloniki International Exhibition Centre, HELEXPO, on September 6-14. The event is the largest trade fair in Southeast Europe, featuring exhibitors from 32 countries. SGC-SGI set up and operated the Press Center of the Trade Fair. in 2008 the Honored Country was Italy, while the main thematic was the Environment. During the Fair the Prime Minister gives his annual address at the Opening Ceremony. Events at the Fair included an Urban Street Festival and the Fashion Forward Exhibition.

Greece’s most high-profile dance event, the Kalamata International Dance Festival, organised by the city of Kalamata and considered one of the leading dance events in the Mediterranean, is scheduled to take place from July 18 to 27. Israeli choreographer Hofesh Shechter, enfant terrible of the London scene, opens the festival. Other important performances include South African Gregory Maqoma, Chinese Ushio Amagatsu, and British choreographer-dancer Jonathan Burrows.

The Athens and Epidaurus Festival, one of Europe's largest summer festivals and a favorite among audiences and critics alike, is underway. The Festival runs from June until August, taking place in several venues: The ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, Odeon of Herodes Atticus, new venues Peiraios 260 and Scholeion, as well as the mobile "Caravan Theatre" which takes the Festival to the streets. The Festival higlights the work of young artists, presents contemporary trends in dance, music and theatre and aims to fall in line with the major European festivals of this kind, a purpose well achived, as last year's Festival was described as "A vibrant arts experience" by the New York Times.

Ninety works from the famous Costakis Collection are displayed in the Museum of Cycladic Art from 14 May to 20 October 2008. The exhibition is entitled Five Seasons of the Russian Avant-garde and includes some of the most significant works of the collection by artists such as Malevich, Popva, Tatlin, Rochenko, Nikritin, Lissitzky, representing all the groups and movements of the Russian avant-guard (1900s-1930s).

The Athens Video Art Festival 08 will be held on April 11-13, at the Technopolis of Athens. The event, already celebrating its fourth birthday, aims at the support of digital culture and the promotion of this modern and innovative form of expression. - Since 1983, the primary objective of ARCHELON, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece, has been to protect the sea turtles and their habitats in Greece through monitoring and research, developing and implementing management plans, habitat restoration, raising public awareness and rehabilitating sick and injured turtles. ARCHELON works closely with state agencies, the local authorities, institutions, other NGOs, fishermen and local inhabitants in order to mitigate and reverse population reduction of sea turtles.

- The 7th Ecocinema International Film Festival will take place in Piraeus between 21-27 February, at Atticon and Cineak cinemas, both located at the Town Hall Square. The films cover a wide range of vital issues the world is facing today - man and the environment, globalization, societies in crisis, and war – and the creative ways that people have found to deal with them. This year the festival pays tribute to the French pioneer of scientific film, Jean Painlevé (1902-1989). Also, in collaboration with SOS Live Earth, the campaign against climate change, Ecocinema Film Festival shall host the SOS Short Films Program.

- Dimitris Papaioannou’s ground-breaking creative direction of the Athens Olympics 2004 Opening Ceremony - hailed a "triumph" by Time magazine and The Times of London - is widely considered a high-water mark for large scale spectacle. - Hearts in Athens 2008, a massive outdoor art exhibition will grace the city of Athens. Starting Monday, 21 of January, 115 hearts/ works of art will be displayed around Athens: painters, sculptors, graffiti artists, architects and fashion designers have contributed by creating their own heart. After the end of the exhibition, the hearts will be sold at auction, with a significant part of the proceeds being donated to the charity "Together for Children".

- According to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Human Development Report 2007/8, published on November 27, Greece ranks 24th in the world, thus maintaining the exact same position as in last years' respective report.
The report's Human Development Index (HDI) ranks 177 countries according to their levels of human development. The HDI is a composite index, gauging countries’ average achievements in three basic dimensions of human development: life expectancy at birth, adult literacy and school enrolment, and GDP per capita.
