May 12th - “Thieves of Baghdad” book presentation

“Thieves of Baghdad” book presentation
“Thieves of Baghdad”, the highly acclaimed book on the looting of the Iraq Museum in April 2003, was presented on Wednesday May 12 at the Greek Press and Communication Office in New York, by its author, the high ranking officer in the US Marine Corps Reserves and native New Yorker of Greek descent Colonel Matthew Bogdanos.

Currently an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan - holding advanced degrees in law, classics and military strategy and having been honored for his service in Afghanistan, the Horn of Africa and Iraq - Matthew Bogdanos is known for his relentless prosecution of criminals and the hunt for stolen antiquities. In his lively presentation, Bogdanos explored the theft and looting of the Iraq Museum in April 2003 through more than one hundred photographs from Afghanistan to Iraq. He also described his team’s recovery of tens of thousands of history’s most priceless antiquities and finally detailed the ongoing efforts of the international community to expose the black market in stolen antiquities that is funding terrorism in Iraq & elsewhere.

The event was attended by members of the Greek-American community, media correspondents in the UN, colleagues from the Public Information Department of the UN as well as Greek media representatives.  

May 6th- Screening of the film "Nyfes"

Screening of the film "Nyfes"
On Friday, May 6, 2010, the Greek Press and Communication Office in New York hosted the screening of the movie “Nyfes” by director Pantelis Voulgaris.

The screening was attended by UN correspondents, associates in various UN departments and colleagues from other Missions to the UN as well as members of the Greek-American community of New York.

The film received extremely positive comments by the audience.

April 29th - “MPAC INDUCTION PROGRAM - Spring 2010” Seminar

On Thursday, April 29, 2010, the Greek Press and Communication Office in New York hosted at its premises the workshop entitled “MPAC INDUCTION PROGRAM - Spring 2010”, organized by the Office of Military Affairs of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations of the United Nations (DPKO/OMA). The workshop was attended by 25 military advisers from 15 countries.

April 26th - "U.S. Policy Toward Greece, Turkey and Cyprus: Developments and Prospects in the Obama Administration" seminar

On Monday April 26 the Greek Press Communication Office in New York hosted a seminar organized by the Washington based American Hellenic Institute (AHI) on the topic of U.S. Policy Toward Greece, Turkey and Cyprus: Developments and Prospects in the Obama Administration. AHI’s Executive Director Nick Larigakis served as moderator of an interesting discussion initiated by the presentations of the Vice President for Defense and Foreign Policy Studies at the esteemed American think tank Cato Institute Ted Galen Carpenter, the Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute in the field of International Economics and former advisor to President Ronald Reagan Doug Bandow and the journalist and Greek newspaper’s ‘Eleftherotypia’ US correspondent for more than 25 years Dimitris Dimas. The event was attended among others by the Consuls General of Greece Ambassador Aghi Balta and Cyprus Koula Sofianou, the former Ambassador of Cyprus to the US Andrew Iakovides, Greek, Greek-American and international media representatives as well as members of the Greek-American community.

Photo: Kostas Beis (The National Herald)While visiting New York as a representative of the Greek government at the annual celebrations for the Greek Independence Day, the Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Spyros Kouvelis met with representatives of Greek-American and Greek Media on Monday April 19, 2010 at the premises of the Press and Communication Office.  

Mr. Kouvelis briefed the media representatives about his meetings in New York, among them his meeting with the UN’s Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Mr. John Holmes and had an engaging discussion with them focusing on the financial crisis in Greece and the ways Greek-Americans could contribute to overcoming it.

Press Conference of the director Giorgos LanthimosOn Tuesday March the 30th, the Greek Press and Communication Office hosted a Press Conference by the director and members of the cast of the Greek film “Dogtooth”, that won the Prix Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009. The director Giorgos Lanthimos and two of the protagonists Christos Passalis and Angeliki Papoulia spoke to the representatives of Greek and American media about the theme and the messages of the film, their cooperation, the various reactions of the audience both inside and outside Greece, as well as about their future plans.  

The film was introduced to the New York audience with screenings at the Museum of Modern Art, during the festival New directors/New Films 2010 on March 30th and March 31st

On Friday, March 5 2010 the Greek Press and Communication Office in New York hosted the screening of the movie “Uranya” by director Kostas Kapakas. The film was introduced by the Director of the Greek Film Festival of New York Professor Emeritus of the University of New York Jimmy DeMetro who stressed the universal values depicted in a movie that takes place in a small village of the Greek countryside of the late 1960s.

The screening was attended by UN correspondents, associates in various UN departments and colleagues from other Missions to the UN as well as members of the Greek-American community of New York. The film received extremely positive comments by the audience both for its artistic value and for its messages.

  

February 4, Business breakfast by the Alternate Greek Foreign Minister, Mr. Dimitris Droutsas, for the correspondents accredited to the United Nations

New York, February 4th 2010, Business breakfast by the Alternate Greek Foreign Minister, Mr Dimitris Droutsas, for the correspondents accredited to the United Nations

The Alternate Greek Foreign Minister, Mr. Dimitris Droutsas, had a business breakfast with more than 30 foreign correspondents accredited to the United Nations, at the premises of the Press and Communication Office in New York, on February 4, 2010.

During this meeting, Mr. Droutsas outlined the main topic of interest of the Greek foreign policy and answered questions of the Media representatives concerning, among other things, the latest developments in the Cyprus issue, the fYROM name issue, the Greek-Turkish relationships and the role of Greece in the Balkans, the Southeast Europe and the Middle East. At a press conference at Greece's Press and Communication Office in New York, on January 26, the head of the Foreign Ministry's Diplomatic and Historical Archives, Fotini Tomai presented a series of evidence, documents and testimonies that reveal and highlight the extent of human tragedy as recorded in the book "Greeks in Auschwitz-Birkenau", a publication of the Greek Foreign Ministry.

Furthermore, Ms. Tomai referred to the actions of Greece in the framework of its participation in the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance, and Research (ITF) and the International Tracing Service (ITS), as well as the upcoming ITS meeting that will take place in Athens on April 14 and 15, 2010.

New York, Jannuary 25th 2010, Annual “Vasilopita cutting” event

More than 50 Greek-American media professionals as well as representatives of Greek media attended the annual “Vasilopita cutting” event hosted by the Consul General of Greece in New York Mrs Aghi Balta, on Monday January 25th at the Consul General’s Residence.

The event was co-organized by the Press and Communication Office and was a unique opportunity for a fruitful exchange of views between professionals of the American and the Greek media worlds. (Photo credit Kostas Bej)

  

January 12, Workshop organized by the Office of Military Affairs of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations of the United Nations

New York, January 12th 2010, Workshop organized by the Office of Military Affairs of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations of the United Nations

On Tuesday, January 12, 2010, the Greek Press and Communication Office in New York, in cooperation with the Office of the Military Adviser of the Permanent Mission of Greece to the United Nations, hosted the workshop entitled “Robust Peacekeeping”,  (DPKO/OMA). Speaker at the event was the Lieutenant General Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor, Military Adviser for Peacekeeping Operations of the United Nations, and the workshop was attended by 60 military advisers from 46 countries.
