September 21 - "The Greek identity of Nikos Kazantzakis"

Ottawa, September 21, 2009
The President of the International Society of Friends of Nikos Kazantzakis, Mr. George Stassinakis, during the lecture on the Greek identity of Nikos Kazantzakis. A lecture on the Greek identity of Nikos Kazantzakis was organized by the Press and Communication Office of Greece, in Ottawa on Monday September 21, 2009 in cooperation with the International Society of Friends of Nikos Kazantzakis and the Cultural Society Parnassos in the Library and Archives Building of Canada.

The lecture by the President of the International Society of Friends of Nikos Kazantzakis, Mr. George Stassinakis, who is lecturing as well as, on the same subject in Toronto, Chicago and Montreal was based on the writings of Kazantzakis, that show his Greek identity.

The speaker was presented by the Director of the Press Office in Ottawa.

The event was attended by members of the Greek Community of Ottawa and a small reception followed.

May 1-18 2009 - Tulip Festival

The Press and Communication Office of Greece in Ottawa, Canada in cooperation with the Trade Office of the Greek Embassy organized the participation, for the first time, in the annual Canadian Tulip Festival in the capital of Canada. The Festival has been held by the City of Ottawa for the last 57 years with the planting of 3 million tulip bulbs in different parts of the city.

This year’s Tulip Festival in Ottawa was held between 1 and 18 May with the participation of 24 countries. More than 250.000 persons attended the 15 cultural events that took place. In the Greek Booth following events took place:

•musical event with a performance of a Bouzouki player,

•Greek traditional dances

•performance of the Greek Community Choir

•presentation of audiovisual material of Greece

•exhibition of handicrafts and art work of Ottawa Greek artists

•sale of jewels and museum copies by the Greek Community

•sale of Greek food and sweets by a local Greek restaurant

•distribution of tourist information

                             

February 8, 2009 - Participation in book presentation in Montreal

Following an invitation the Press Counsellor in Ottawa Theodossis Demetracopoulos participated in the presentation of the book “Avana’s calendar” written by the author and journalist Ioustini Frangouli. The event was organized by the Consul General of Greece in Montreal Mrs. Maria Karnoutsou, on February 8, 2009 at the Greek Community Center of Montreal.

The Consul General in her introductory remarks stressed the importance of similar events for the Greek communities abroad, noting that they enhance the ties of its members.

Professor Stephanos Constantinides of the Center for Greek Researches in Canada gave a detail account of the book while the Borough Mayor of Le Plateau-Mont-Royal, Helen Fotopulos pointed out the contributions of the writer in the cultural events of Montreal. Demetracopoulos spoke about the dual identity of Mrs. Frangouli as a writer and a journalist.

More than 200 people attended the event among which were members of the political elite of the city the leadership of the Greek Community and members of the Greek Consulate in Montreal. The event was followed by a reception offered by the Greek General Consulate in Montreal.
