May 6, 2009 - Seminar on the Parthenon Marbles and the New Acropolis Museum at the University of Helsinki

On the initiative of the Press & Communication Office of Embassy of Greece and in cooperation with the Finnish Committee for the Restitution of the Parthenon Marbles and the University of Helsinki, a seminar on the Restitution of the Parthenon Marbles and the New Acropolis Museum was organized on Wednesday, 6th May 2009, at the University of Helsinki. More than 300 guests attended the event that honoured with their presence the President of the Hellenic Republic Dr. Karolos Papoulias and his wife Mrs. May Papoulias.

H.E. the President of Greece, during his short speech thanked the Finnish Committee for its efforts and underlined that the return of the Parthenon Marbles in Greece is an issue of global dimension, such as the Acropolis’ message to the world.  

The President referred also to the opening of the New Acropolis Museum on June, expressing his belief that soon the Marbles will find their place in the New Museum.

Key-speakers of the seminar were Dimitris Pantermalis, Professor of Archaeology of the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki and Director of the Organisation for the Construction of the New Acropolis Museum, Anthony Snodgrass, Emeritus Professor in Classical Archaeology at the University of Cambridge, specialist in Archaic Greece and Chair of the British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles and Ole Norrback, ex Minister and President of the Finnish Committee.
