The Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democraty in cooperation with the Press and Communication Office of the Consulate General of Greece in Boston and the Maliotis Cultural Centre presented a Tribute to one of the most renowned opera singers of the twentieth century: Maria Callas, on Saturday, February 28, 2009, at the Maliotis  Center. This unique Tribute consisted of the opening reception of a photographic Exhibition and a concert with Greek-American Soprano Stella Markou.

Speakers at the well attended event were the Consul General of Greece Constantinos Orphanides, the General Director of Opera Boston, Mrs. Carole Charnow and the Secretary General of the Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy, Professor Evangelos Chrysos.

The Photographic Exhibition was first presented in Athens, in 2007, under the title Maria Callas 30 Years Later on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Callas’ death, at the Exhibition Hall of the Hellenic Parliament Foundation. Since then, it became the traveling exhibition Maria Callas: A Tribute, which was shown for the first time in the U.S. last February in Washington, D.C.

It presents a selection of photographs from the archives of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Greek National Theater, the Associated Press, the Hellenic Literary and Historical Archives, the Benaki Museum in Athens, EMI Classics, the Greek Radio and Television (ERT) Historical Archives, the Arena Theater in Verona, as well as private collections. The photographs are complemented by small works by Greek Artists Karolos Kambelopoulos and Aspasia Papadoperaki.

Soprano Stella Markou (www.stellamarkou.com), performed a selection from Callas’ favorite repertoire, which featured works of Puccini, Gounod, Rossini and Verdi. She was accompanied by pianist-composer Panos Liaropoulos, Professor of Music at the University of Massachusetts.

The Tribute to Maria Callas exhibition will remain at the Maliotis Cultural Center through March 29, 2009. After that, it will travel to Houston, Texas. For more information please visit www.maliotis.org
