Events organised under the SGC-SGI auspices
23-24 October 2008 - 3rd Euro-Mediterranean Journalism Institute
A two-day event was held at the Press Centre of the SGC - SGI, as part of the 8-day "Euro-Mediterranean Journalism Institute" educational program.
The 3nd annual "Euro-Med Journalism Institute" (EMJI), held between 18-26 October 2008 in Athens, is co-organized by the Fund for American Studies (TFAS) and the Greek Association for Atlantic and European Cooperation, (GAAEC), with the support of the Secretariat General of Communication - Secretariat General of Information. The conference brought together some 50 young journalists and journalism students from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the U.S. .
Among the speakers, who debated issues such as public diplomacy, communications policies and media developments in the two-day event were: Stefanie Babst, NATO's Assistant Deputy Secretary General for Public Diplomacy, Ambassador Byron Theodoropoulos, Greek Foreign Ministry spokesman George Koumoutsakos, Deputy Spokesperson for PASOK main opposition party, Maria Karaklioumi, Director of Public Relations at SGC-SGI Achilles Paparsenos, Public Affairs Attache at the US Embassy in Athens Carol L. Kalin and Assistant Professor at the University of Macedonia Dimitris Keridis.

8-17 May 2007 - Chinese media delegation visit
For the 11th year running, and in co-operation with the All-China Journalists Association, the SGC – SGI is hosting (from 8 to 17 May, 2008) a visit by a 12 member-Chinese media delegation, as part of an annual exchange-visit programme, aiming to promote and strengthen mutual cultural understanding and Greek-Chinese bilateral relations.
Aside coming into contact with contemporary Greece, the on-visit delegation will be provided with an insight into the Greek experience of hosting the 2004 Olympic Games, as well as into the tangible and intangible heritage of the Games, evident in the resulting infrastructure, know-how and specialized human capital.
This is an issue of special interest to China, whose capital Beijing is hosting the coming summer Olympics.
While in Athens, the Chinese delegation will meet with the Speaker of Greek Parliament as well as SGC – SGI officials, the Board of the Journalists Union of Athens Daily Newspapers; they will also visit the headquarters of Greek Radio Television as well as of Greek newspapers.
Furthermore, the delegation will be given a tour of archaeological and cultural sites of the Greek capital.
The delegation will also take part in a 2-day visit to the Saronic Gulf islands of Hydra and Spetses, as well as to Ancient Olympia, where they will be given a tour of the archaeological site.
This will be followed by a 3-day visit to Greece’s second largest city, Thessaloniki, where delegates will meet with the Minister for Macedonia and Thrace, the Board of the Journalists Union of Daily Newspapers of Macedonia and Thrace, representatives of HELEXPO and the Wine Producers Association of the Vineyard of Northern Greece; the will also be given a tour of the archaeological sites of Vergina and Pella.
1-2 October 2007 - 2nd Euromed journalism institute
A one-day event was held at the Press Centre of the SGC - SGI, consisting of talks and debates as part of the 8-day "Euro-Med Journalism Institute" conference.
The 2nd annual "Euro-Med Journalism Institute" conference (EMJI), held between September 29 and October 7, 2007, was co-organized by the Fund for American Studies (TFAS) and the Greek Association for Atlantic and European Cooperation, (GAAEC), under the auspices of the Secretariat General of Communication - Secretariat General of Information. The conference brought together working journalists and journalism students from the Balkans, the Mediterranean and around the world.
Speakers and topics in the one-day event on October 2nd included:
- Panos Livadas, Secretary General for Information George Koumoutsakos, Greek Foreign Affairs spokesman
- Ambassador Byron Theodoropoulos, on "Interdependence between Press and Diplomacy"
- Ino Afentouli (journalist and Information Officer at NATO - Public Diplomacy Division), Dr Ioannis Karmakolias (World Bank), and Ambassador Gregory Vasilokonstantakis (Foreign Affairs Ministry), on "International Organizations in the New Information Age”
- Spiro Spiridon regional governor of Southern Greece, a jounalist and a forestry expert on "Fires in Greece: the Aftermath"
