Events organised by the Press Office in Belgrade - 2008
7-11 October 2008 - Greece as Country of Honour at the 5th International Animated Film Festival “BALKANIMA”
The 5th annual International Animated Film «BALKANIMA 2008» was held in Belgrade 7-11th of October dedicating its special program to the Greek Animation and the contemporary Greek audiovisual art, which was represented by more than 16 Greek artists who participated in the events with the support of the Hellenic Audiovisual Institute (I.O.M.), the European Animation Center in Athens, and the Athens School of Fine Arts. The promotion of the Greek program of the Balkanima 2008 and the activities of the Greek participants at the Festival was part of the involvement of the Press and Communications Office of the Embassy of Greece in Belgrade.
Addressing the opening of both the Balkanima Festival and the special Greek program, the Press Counselor of the Greek Embassy, Petros Tsarouchis, stressed, among other things, that the large presence of Greek artists and the support offered by I.O.M., the European Animation Center, the School of Fine Arts, as well as the Greek Embassy in Belgrade, which hosted a reception honoring the Greek participants at the Festival, provide strong evidence of Greece’s efforts to further strengthen cultural ties between the Greek and Serbian people, along with the already excellent bilateral relations in politics, economics and investment.
Balkanima Festival enjoyed a large coverage by Serbia’s most important media (newspapers, TV and Internet) while special attention was given to the Greek part of the festival, which also included an audiovisual exhibition entitled “Animated Greece: Watch Now!”, as well as workshops and presentations by internationally acclaimed Greek artists, such as Nasos Vakalis, director and animator who is currently working for the feature animation development unit of DreamWorks Animation Studios in Dream Works (Hollywood), and history/film academic, Ioannis Vasiliadis.
21st Belgrade Marathon (14 – 19 April, 2008)
On the occasion of the 21st Belgrade Marathon race, which is one of the most significant athletic events in Serbia, a number of events were organized by the Greek Embassy and the Greek Press & Communications Office in Belgrade, in cooperation with the Belgrade Marathon Committee, the City of Belgrade, the Greek National Secretariat of Sports (S.E.G.A.S.) and the City of Marathon in Greece, connecting the race to its historic Greek origins.
A special ceremony marking the arrival of the Marathon Flame on April 14th was held at the Belgrade City Hall, when a representatives of S.E.G.A.S. and the City of Marathon passed the Flame onto a symbolic torch race run by Serbian marathon runners Franjo Mihalic and Olivera Jeftic, who in turn delivered the Flame to Greek Ambassador Hristos Panagopoulos and Belgrade Mayor Zoran Alimpic.
A protocol was signed between the representatives of both countries, followed by a press conference.
The Marathon Flame was lit at the Opening of the Marathon Race, on April 19th, as well as during the crowning of the winners by the Greek Ambassador crowned with gold, silver and bronze olive wreathes, originating from the historic Marathon Tomb in Greece.
A Greek stand under the banner “Wonderful Greece” at the exhibition and Registration Centre for the Belgrade Marathon (April 13th –18th), promoted Greece and the Athens classical Marathon race.
