Events organised by the Press Office in Ottawa - 2008

24 November 2008 - Screening of Greek film within the 23nd European Film Festival in Ottawa (EUFF)

The Greek Film “The Wake” by director Nicos Grammatikos, was shown at the auditorium of Library and Archives of Canada on November 24, 2008 within the frame of the 23nd European Film Festival, an annually event during the month of November in Ottawa.

The event was organized by the Greek Press and Communication Office in cooperation with the Embassy of Greece in Ottawa and the Canadian Film Institute.

The screening of the film was introduced by the director of the Canadian Film Institute Mr. Tom McSorley and the outgoing Press Counsellor Mr.Ioannis Petsilas. Tourist and other information material about Greece was distributed, before the screening by the Press and Communication Office.

It was a successful screening, attended by 300 people approximately, among which were members of the diplomatic corps, journalists, representatives of the arts and letters and members of the Greek Community of Ottawa.

A reception was hosted by the Press and Communication Office after the screening.

18 November 2008 - Participation in Greek Business & Innovation Co-operation Event in Ottawa

The Press & Communication Office participated actively in the organization of the Greek Economic Event, entitled “Greece: Doing Business and Pursuing Joint Innovation Projects”, which took place on November 18th 2008 and focused on the promotion of bilateral economic & scientific co-operation.

The working matinée was successfully co-organized at Sheraton Ottawa Hotel by the Office for Economic & Commercial Affairs of the Embassy of Greece in Ottawa, the Invest in Greece Agency, the Praxi/Help Forward Network, the Ottawa Center for Research and Innovation (OCRI), the Export Development Canada (EDC) and the Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance (CATA). The event was attended by approximately 70 representatives of Canadian enterprises, business associations, ministries, universities, research institutes, as well as by members of the media and the Greek Community of Ottawa.

The workshop was introduced by H.E. the Ambassador of Greece Mr. Nikolaos Matsis, followed by the two visiting speakers from Greece, Mr. Nikolaos Stamou, Policy and Planning Officer with the Invest in Greece Agency, and Mrs. Anastasia Konstantinou, Senior Technology Transfer Consultant with the Praxi Network. From the Canadian side, presentations were offered by Mr. Burak Aktas, Regional Manager for Eastern Mediterranean at EDC and Mr. Dino Bakakis, Managing Director at Red Line Communications.

Mr. Nikolaos Stamou analyzed the role of Greece as an ideal geo-economic partner for Canadian enterprises to expand their business in South-East Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean Basin. On the other hand, Mrs. Anastasia Konstantinou presented the opportunities for joint Research and Innovation projects between businesses, research institutes and academia in Greece and Canada.

From the Canadian side, Mr. Aktas referred to EDC’s support in the promotion of Canadian business interests abroad and emphasized the role of Greece as a strategic hub for business in the wider area of South-East Europe and Eastern Mediterranean.

The event was followed by a reception offered by the Embassy of Greece with the support of our Office.

23 May 2008 - Event in memory of Maria Callas in Ottawa

Soprano Elisabeth Shawne singing ariasA tribute to the great Greek soprano Maria Callas was held on May 23, 2008, at the Auditorium of Library and Archives Canada. The event was organized by the Press and Communication Office in collaboration with the Parnassos Hellenic Cultural Society and the Canadian Institute for Mediterranean Studies, under the auspices of the Embassy of Greece.

The ambassador of Greece to Canada, Nicolaos Matsis, was main speaker at the event, who made a detailed presentation of the life and work of the Greek soprano followed by a screening of selected Callas performances.

The event, which began with Canadian soprano Elisabeth Shawne performing arias sung by Maria Callas, concluded with a reception hosted by the Greek Embassy.

"Celebration of Cultures"
19 March, 2008 - “Celebration of Cultures” in Ottawa

The Press and Communication Office of the Greek Embassy in Ottawa on March 19, 2008, participated, for the second consecutive year, in the 11th “Celebration of Cultures” organized by the Algonquin College of Ottawa (vocational training institution, with 16.000 students). This annual event aims to acquaint the Canadian public, and particularly the student body, with the cultural wealth of countries from around the world. This year’s event was highlighted by the participation of 32 different diplomatic Missions.

The program included a “Greek Culture Hour”, with a build-it Greek Architecture competition for students, at the conclusion of which, Press Attachι Georgia Marioli awarded the prizes. The Press and Communication Office participated with its own display table, distributing tourist, cultural and other audiovisual material from Greece, as well samples of Greek cuisine.
