Literary evening in HamburgLiterary evening  in Hamburg (26 February, 2008)

An introduction to modern Greek literature, which included actor and director Christoph Roethel readings extracts from works by Zirana Zateli and Giorgos Ioannou, took place at the Helmut-Schmidt University in Hamburg, on February 26th, 2008. The event was the product of collaboration between the Greek Press and Communication Office in Hamburg, Helmut-Schmidt University, and the writer and translator Danae Koulmasi. The event was held alongside the exhibition of paintings by Iakovos Xenakis, which opened in the same premises on February 19th. Opening statements were made by the University Library director Dr. Johannes Marbach, and Anna Daskalopoulou, Director of the Press and Communication Office, and the event concluded with a reception.

Opening of Iakovos Xenakis painting exhibition in Hamburg (19 February, 2008)

The opening of an exhibition of works by the artist Iakovos Xenakis, at the Library of the Helmut-Schmidt University in Hamburg, took place February 19th, 2008. The event was organised by the University, in collaboration with the Greek Press and Communication Office in Hamburg.
Opening statements about the artist and his work were made by the Library director Dr. Johannes Marbach, as well as Thomas Sello of the Hamburg State Gallery, and Anna Daskalopoulou, Director of the Press and Communication Office; the event also featured a performance by soprano Franka Kraneis.

A concert featuring Beethoven’s “Creatures of Prometheus” and Constantia Gourtzis’ (professor at Munich’s Musical University) composition “Poems for Prometheus” were performed by the Hamburg Camerata Orchestra, at the Laeiszhalle Philharmonic Concert Hall in Hamburg, on February 13th, 2008.  Claus Bantzer conducted the orchestra, while actor Udo Samel narrated from Goethe’s “Prometheus” the well known myth. A reception followed at the Johannes Brahms Foyer of the Laeiszhalle. The event was organised by the Press and Communication Office and held under the auspices of the Greek Consulate in Hamburg, in collaboration with the Hamburg Camerata.

Celebration of the Epiphany
The Greek Press and Communication Office in Hamburg, on the occasion of the celebration of the Epiphany on January 6th, andin collaboration with the city’s Greek Orthodox Church, organizedthe traditional Ceremony of the Blessing of the waterson the Elbe River. The immersion of the Holy Cross in the water was conducted by the Rickmer-Rickmers museum-ship. The outdoor celebratory event was preceded bythe celebration of theEpiphany Mass at the St Nicholas Greek-OrthodoxChurch, and attended by representatives from other Christian denominations, Hamburg City authorities, the business and shipping sector, as well as from the Media (Die Welt, Bild Zeitung, Hamburger Abendblatt, Hamburger Morgenpost).

Traditionally, young men and women dive into the freezing waters to retrieve the wooden cross; the ritual celebrates Jesus' baptism, it is about tradition and rebirth.
