Information Society

The Operational Programme “Information Society” constitutes one of the most significant programmes applied in Greece, in the context of the Third Community Support Framework, as it promotes information technologies in public services, schools, local service companies along with the development of high speed connections.

For the Secretariat General of Communication-Secretariat General of Information, the Operational Programme consists of 9 projects, with a budget of approximately 3.600.000 Euros:

  • Upgrading of the SGC-SGI Integrated Information System (IIS) in order to ensure completeness, safety and speed for the media professionals and citizens using the system : budget 1,092,000 euros, project completed;
  • Creating Digital Libraries for SGC-SGI and the following organizations:  Hellenic Audiovisual Institute (I.O.M.), Journalists Union of Athens Daily Newspapers (ESIEA) and Journalists Union Of Macedonian And Thracian Daily Press (ESIEMTH) : budget 600,000 euros, project completed (www.presslibraries.gr);
  • Development of a system which will enable the recording and classification of radio and T.V. broadcasts: budget 263,000 euros, project completed;
  • Digitalization and Provision of Audiovisual material from the State Newsreels & Documentaries Archive: budget 750,000 euros, completed;
  • Reorganization of the Secretariat General of Information - Secretariat General of Communication: budget 492,000 euros, implemenation phase;
  • Two projects regarding the technical and scientific support of the aforementioned projects. Total budget 200,000 euros, completed;
  • Two projects regarding the maturity and prepardness of SGC-SGI for NSRF projects, budget 160.00 euros, completed

          

  • Recording and classification of radio and T.V. broadcasts

Within the framework of the work being carried out for the development of a media moniting system, a paper entitled "Media Monitoring by Means of Speech and Language Indexing for Political Analysis," by Demiros Iason, Papageorgiou Harris, Antonopoulos Vassilios, Pipis Andreas and Skoulariki Athina was published in the Journal of Information Technology & Politics (JITP, Volume 5, Number 1, Spring 2008, Haworth Press).

Paper Abstract: In this paper, we describe a media monitoring system that we have developed and implemented for the Secretariat General of Communication and Secretariat General of Information in Greece (SGC-SGI). The system applies emerging technologies for audiovisual recording, speech recognition,language processing, multimedia indexing and retrieval, all integrated into a large video and audio library that covers broadcast news and current affairs in Greek and English. It assists the SGC-SGI in compiling information,annotating and analyzing news and monitoring national, political, social, economic, cultural and environmental issues concerning Greece in general.
