Routes Europe 2013,” Europe’s biggest airline and airport networking route development forum, was concluded with one more award for the Athens International Airport, its 12th in 9 years. During the 8th Routes Europe Forum, which was held in Budapest on May 12-14 with the participation of more than 1,000 aviation professionals, Athens International Airport was the award Winner in the 4–20 million. passengers category in recognition of its creativity and continuous dynamic support to its airline partners, especially in light of the extremely adverse conditions that the Greek economy is facing. Having received the airlines’ recognition for 9 consecutive years, Athens International Airport (AIA) is the most awarded airport for its airport marketing performance. Plato’s Hidden Musical Code

Ancient Greek philosopher Plato (427-347 BC), who was instrumental in laying the foundations for Western philosophy and science, used a regular pattern of symbols to give his books a musical structure, according to a new discovery by researcher Dr Jay Kennedy of Manchester University’s Centre for the History of Science Technology and Medicine. In a five-year study, working with original scripts, Kennedy has observed how Plato used a regular pattern of symbols based on the 12 notes of the Greek musical scale, inherited from the ancient followers of Pythagoras. Using computer technology, he discovered that some key phrases, themes and words occurred during regular intervals, which matched the spacing of the 12-note scale. More in Classical-music.com

Pedro Olalla: Greek by Choice

The Laboratory of International Relations and European Integration of the University of Macedonia organized an event titled “Rebuilding a New Europe: The role of humanism” on May 20 to honor Perdo Olalla as part of the Jean Monnet Program "New Challenges in the Dynamics of the EU Integration Process." Key note speaker at the conference was writer and film director: Pedro Olalla Gonzalez de la Vega, born in 1966, in Oviedo, Spain, has multiple qualities: philologist, translator and filmmaker. During this event, there was a screening of his documentary titled “Why Greece.” This was followed by the presentation of an honorary plaque to Olalla, for his contribution to Greek culture. The City of Athens: an Open Stage

Athens Mayor George Kaminis unveiled a rich arts programme on May 20, planned by the City of Athens at various venues around the city, spanning the period from May to November 2013, under the banner “Centre and neighbourhoods all one stage." Events include concerts, theatre, dance, art exhibitions, trade fairs and even international festivals that are organised by Athens 'Technopolis' at Gazi, the Athens Municipality Organisation for Culture, Sports and Youth and the Athens Artists' Network.  All events are either low-cost or free, making the city an attractive destination for visitors and tourists. Among the highlights are the 36th Book Festival at Pedion tou Areos from May 24 to June 9, an international jazz festival at Technolopolis on May 31 - June 2, the "Athens Video Art Festival" on June 7-9, the Athens Garden Festival on June 15-18 at the National Gardens, the 2nd World Music festival on July 15-19, and a month-long street theatre festival taking place in Athens' squares and pedestrian roads starting on September 7.
